London has many world-class museums that play an essential role in the cultural life of the capital; ranging from small and specialist to colossal, there are over 300 museums to choose from. There are museums covering design, public transport, military, art, science, natural history, theatre, maritime, topography, fashion, and more; whatever you interest, there is a museum specifically to your taste. Most of the main London museums are free to enter; although the London Pass will give you free admission to other charging exhibitions, free audio tours, free museum guidebooks or other benefits.

With millions of people visiting each year, the British Museum is one of the best museums of the world; it was opened in 1753 and houses the incredible amount of more than 7 millions objects showing the story of human culture from prehistoric times to the present moment. Famous objects include the Rosetta Stone, the Tomb of Payava, the Magna Carta, and the Sutton Hoo among other unique treasures



London Design Museum

The Design Museum is located on the banks of the River Thames between Tower Bridge and Bermondsey. It is a must for anyone interested in modern and contemporary design, fashion and architecture, the museum covers product, industrial, graphic, fashion and architectural design. The permanent exhibition displays of design products ranging from classic cars to home utensils. It attracts more than 200,000 people a year through its doors.



London Natural History Museum

Based in South Kensington near Hyde Park, it is one of three large museums on Exhibition Road; the National History Museum comprises some 70 million items on display across hundred of exhibits being the most famous the dinosaur skeletons exhibition. Many of the collections have enormous importance, such as specimens recollected by Darwin. The Museum is a beautiful building in itself.

The Science Museum, founded in 1857, is one of the top ten tourist attractions in London. The museum show the major scientific advances since the past 300 years, there is over 40 galleries covering every area of the science including technology, computing, medicine, photography and more. The Science Museum contains more than 10,000 exhibits ranging from working steam engines to the Apollo 10 Command module, the permanent displays are free but charges apply to the IMAX 3D film theatre, simulators and some exhibitions.



Sir John Soane's Museum

Sir John Soane was a neo-classical architect and avid collector of antiquities and art, his house, museum and library has been a fantastic museum of architecture since the early 19th century. Collections include 17th and 18th century sculptures; Hogarth paintings; Canaletto prints; John Flaxman sculptures; Egyptian, Classical, Medieval and Renaissance antiquities, more than 30,000 architectural drawings; and the alabaster sarcophagus of Seti I. The Soane's Museum is located in the Holborn district.

Named after Prince Albert and Queen Victoria and founded in the 1850s, the Victoria and Albert Museum, better known as the V&A, is a must on every London itinerary. The Museum boasts a collection of over 4 million art objects including ceramics, furniture, fashion, glass, costumes, jewellery, metalwork, ironwork, photographs, sculpture, textiles, drawings and prints from many of the world's richest cultures dating from 3000BC to the present day. The museum also possesses the world’s largest collection of post classical sculpture, the holdings of Italian Renaissance, including seven Raphael masterpieces.



London Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum is the largest military museum in London. The Museum holds military weapons, vehicles, memorabilia and photographic archives. The museum also houses a large compilation of oral recordings of interviews with persons who where affected by war in the past century, so you can discover the story of this people. The Museum also houses an celebrated Holocaust Exhibition, a Secret War gallery and art galleries holding excellent paintings. It is located on the site of famous St Mary's Bethlehem mental asylum, known as Bedlam. Open from: daily 10am-6pm.



London National Maritime Museum

The National Maritime Museum, located in the heart of historic Greenwich, is the leading museum of its kind in the world. The museum houses the most important collection of objects related to seafaring including maritime art, cartography, manuscripts, paintings, photographic archives and ship models. The museum enjoys extraordinary views of the Thames from its elevated position.
